The array has acoustical subunits (32a-32c) each having a column of micromachined ultrasonic transducer interconnected cells, where the subunits are reconfigurable. Access switches and matrix switches are electrically coupled to the subunits. The subunits are switchably connectable to selected system channels (58) by the access switches and access lines. A switch state control circuit controls the state of both the switches.
