A method for closing and contacting lower and upper tables (2, 3) with a low, defined contact pressure where their bases (2a, 3a) are fixed in the moulding direction (10) and the mould platen (2b) is moved relative to (2a) over a small moulding path (9) by the application of mould pressure, in which the pressure and the path (9) are realised by pneumatic means, especially with compressed air cushion(s) (4) mounted between the platen and base of (2) and/or (3). Independent claims are included for (1) a method for automatically locking the relative position of two movable tables (2, 3) with a threaded spindle (7) which can be screwed out of a casing (24), both being connected to a table, in which the spindle carries a motor-driven driving nut (12) and lock nut (13), one part (8a) of a locking device (8) is connected to the nut-spindle unit and jammed with the other part (8b) fixed to the casing (24) by moving it lengthwise, the distance between (12) and (13) can be changed between (a) an initial state in which the spindle (7) is not under press load, nut (13) is not braced against nut (12) and both can be screwed on the spindle and (b) an end state in which (12) is locked on the spindle and cannot be turned (2) a press drive with a casing (24) and a threaded spindle (7) connected to tables (2, 3) as above .
