The method involves engaging a power train by releasing two torque transmission devices, and selecting and engaging a preset target gear (14) in a subgear. The target gear is selected and engaged in another side of the subgear. The power train is continued to be engaged during the engagement of the gear. The transmission devices provided on a gear input shaft of the subgear is locked. An independent claim is included for a gear control unit for a motor vehicle device.
