The monitoring device includes a device for detecting phase failure and providing a diagnosis using a time shift of the zero-crossing point of at least one delta voltage or star voltage of the multiphase supply system. The time shift is preferably within or outside a time window. A measuring circuit (2,3,4) triggers a fault alarm when phase failure or phase amplitude reduction is detected. An independent claim is included for a method of diagnosing a phase failure for a network monitoring device.
