The method involves connecting a server platform (28) to the sensors (22,24,26) connected to a machine tool (12) and to the electronic control unit (14) of the machine tool through a data link (20). The server platform has computer model algorithms (34,36) that produce a computer model representing the behavior of the machine tool using the characteristic data sent from the sensors, and a computer model for compensating the variable characteristics of the machine tool. Machine control data, based on the computer models, are then sent to the electronic control unit to operate the machine tool. The machine tool and its electronic control unit are arranged in a manufacturing plant (10). The sensors are arranged with the machine tool in the manufacturing plant to determine the characteristic data of the machine tool. The server platform is provided independent of the manufacturing plant. The sensors send the determined characteristic data to the server platform through the data link.
