Method for determining the concentration of germs and or bacteria in a painting plant has the following steps: taking of a paint sample (3a) from the painting plant (2) and insertion of the paint sample in a container (4) followed by shaking it for a defined period at a controlled temperature. Prior to shaking the concentration of gases in a gas mixture that fills the sealed container is measured. After shaking and after a give period of time the gas concentrations are measured again, with any change being attributable to microbiological action. Gas concentrations measured can be oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane or nitrogen dioxide, which can be used to measure the concentrations of different microbes.
