The method involves regulating an automatic transmission (14) by clutches (K1-K3) and brakes, and adjusting parking and neutral positions and forward and backward driving positions of the transmission. The clutches and the brakes are partially closed in the parking position and/or during a change in the forward and/or backward positions. A transmission output shaft is blocked during complete closing of the clutches and the brakes.
