Production of steel (1) of high Mn and low C content from molten crude iron (2) or molten steel and slag formers (4) involving introduction of molten ferromanganese containing about 6% C and molten steel (3a) containing about 0.1% C into FeMn-refining converter (6a) with slag former (4). Oxygen blast (7) via top lance (8) and nozzles (9) lowers the C content to about 0.7-0.8% and by continuous oxygen blasting through the nozzles the C content is further lowered to about 0.05-0.1%. An independent claim is included for a melting unit for production of high manganese low carbon steel as described above.
