A heat exchanger system for a hot water tank, e.g. heated by various methods including solar heating, has coils (1) of stainless steel pipe positioned onto an inner end wall (3) of the tank and covered by a stainless steel guide plate (2) to form a simple efficient heat exchanger. Cold water is introduced via an internal rising pipe (16) to flow over the pipes and out of a hot water outlet (13). The hot water inside the tank transfers heat through the stainless plates and coils and runs down the sides of the tank due to increase in density as it cools.
