The method involves providing signal patterns of sensor unit (2) along with a directional code to a table (8). A marking pattern is scanned for the production of a corresponding signal pattern. A best adapted unit pattern is found, and the motional direction determined based on the code belonging to the best suited unit pattern is used for recognition of direction of rotation in gear shifts of vehicles. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining the direction of relative movement between a body and sensor unit.
