A gas discharge bulb, such as a mercury vapour bulb, has a glass bulb that is internally coated with a transparent layer of aluminium, phosphor and oxygen. The transparent layer is 30 to 100 nanometres within a total layer of 10 nanometres to 10 micrometres thick. The bulb can also be of a type emitting ultra violet, UV, or infra red, IR, emissions.
