The invention relates to a method for determining the position of a mobile device, in particular an emergency-call device (11) comprising a satellite-supported position-determination module (24) and a transceiver unit (26), which is at least capable of establishing a data-transmission link to a central station (10) of an emergency-call system. The aim of the invention is to enable the position of the device to be determined almost immediately after said device has been activated. To achieve this, once a data-transmission link has been established between the mobile device (11) and the central station (10), the basic data necessary for a satellite-supported position determination is transmitted from the central station (10) to the mobile device (11) and the current position data of the mobile device (11) is calculated from satellite data that has been received, using the basic data transmitted from the central station (10). The emergency-call device (11) comprises, in particular, an emergency-call switch (29), which is used to connect said device to an internal voltage supply (30) for activating the control unit and initiating an emergency-call transmission programme.
