A random engagement roller chain sprocket (112, 114) for use primarily inautomotive engine chain drive applications whichincorporates different asymmetrical tooth profiles for improved noisereduction. In particular, the sprocket (112, 114) includes a firstplurality of sprocket teeth each having a first tooth profile (132) includinga first engaging flank (304), a first engaging root (pT.C), and afirst flat (144) positioned between the first engaging flank and firstengaging root wherein a first roller (314) initially contacts the first flatatthe onset of the first roller meshing with the sprocket. The sprocket alsoincludes a second plurality of sprocket teeth each having a secondtooth profile (136) different from the first tooth profile and including asecond engaging flank (302), a second engaging root (Pt.B) , and asecond flat (lambda) tangent to the second engaging root remote from thesecond engaging flank wherein a second roller (342) initiallycontacts the second flat at the onset of meshing between the second roller andthe sprocket.
