An underground cavity installation for storage of liquefied natural gas or other fluid with similar properties at near atmospheric pressure, has a liquid and gas tight lining covering an inner surface of a container volume formed by insulation blocks that are assembled and supported from a cavity wall, such that a void space is formed between the wall and the blocks and is occupied by a stabilized, porous and gas permeable fill material. An underground cavity installation for storage of liquefied natural gas or other fluid with similar properties at near atmospheric pressure, comprises a liquid and gas tight lining covering an inner surface of a container volume formed by insulation blocks that are assembled and supported from a cavity wall, such that a void space is formed between the cavity wall and the insulation blocks. The void space is occupied by a stabilized, porous and gas permeable fill material that allows gas leakage detection and gas pressure relief in the event of leakage from the container volume. An independent claim is also included for a method of leakage detection and pressure release of vaporized fluid in an underground storage of liquefied natural gas at near atmospheric pressure, comprising providing a stabilized, gas permeable layer encapsulating the storage volume; introducing an inert gas flow in an upper region of the gas permeable layer; extracting the inert gas flow from a bottom region of the gas permeable layer by applying sub-pressure in the bottom region; continuously monitoring the extracted gas flow with respect to content of vaporized storage fluid; and accelerating the gas flow from the bottom region of the gas permeable layer upon detection of a leakage from the storage volume.
