The grab (12) comprises a base and four fixed position side walls. The base comprises parts which can be moved between a closed position and an open position in which they extend parallel to the side walls or form an extension of the side walls. The device comprises a lifting device (11) for lifting refuse from a container (1, 2) and transferring it to a mobile collection container (10) on e.g. a truck (9), a grab, a means for opening the grab, a means for pushing the open grab into the refuse container, a means for closing the grab and a means for lifting the closed grab and the refuse held in it out of the container.
