The application describes a method for reducing the spread of the signal-to-noise ratio estimation results for a signal with relative phase and coherent amplitude modulation. The invention is characterized in that in order to calculate the noise power samples in the system, the amplitude error and the phase increment error obtained in the receiving device are combined by shifting these errors (1) and (4) to the corresponding point of the first constellation ring (6), as if this ring was transferred without any changes, to then calculate the square of the modulus of the vector (9) of the error. Thus, the invention minimizes and equalizes the spread of samples obtained for different even and odd number of bits per carrier used by the system. In addition, the invention achieves a reduction in the spread of the signal-to-noise ratio estimate in a multi-user digital communication system. The aforementioned estimate is necessary to select the number of bits per carrier with the ability to adapt to the channel response, and is also needed as ancillary information when using a diversity receiver.
