The present invention relates to a process for producing hot reduction gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen for reducing fine-grained metal ores, particularly iron ore wherein the reduction gas is generated by gasification of carbon-containing materials, particularly coal, under addition of oxygen in a gasification zone and subsequently cooled to a reduction gas temperature conducive to the reduction process. To produce a reduction gas of greater thermodynamic stability, water and/or carbon monoxide are added to eliminate the Boudouard reaction and heterogeneous water gas reaction and the concomitant warming of the reduction gas. A corresponding apparatus for making the above-described process is disclosed in the present invention, too.
