PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new material usable as a substrate material and further as a superconducting thin film device by synthesizing an intermetallic compound containing a compound having an Au3 Cu type crystal structure. SOLUTION: This intermetallic compound contains a compound having an Au3 Cu type crystal structure and is represented by chemical composition formula [R1 C1 ]m [M2 B2 ]n [M3 M']. In the formula, (m) is zero or a natural number, (n) is 1, R is one or =2 kinds among Y, Sc, and rare earth elements, M is one or more kinds among the elements of the group IVb, Vb, etc., M' is one or =2 kinds among the elements of the group I, II, etc., and M3 M' is a compound having an Au3 Cu type crystal structure. This intermetallic compound is used as a substrate material suitable for thin film lamination, e.g. of a rare earth - nickel - boron carbide type intermetallic compound superconductor. Further, that having the above composition formula where M is Ni, Pd, etc., and M' is Al, Si, etc., is a superconductor having about 9.0K superconducting critical temp. Tc .
