New plant polypeptide PK-P and nucleic acids that encode it, useful for producing transgenic plants with improved resistance to Sclerotinia, also for evaluating and selecting for resistance
Isolated polypeptide PK-P, involved in resistance of plants to Sclerotinia, having at least 60 % identical with a 657 amino acid sequence (SEQ ID No. 2), is new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) polynucleotide (I) that: (a) encodes PK-P; (b) is complementary to (a); or (c) hybridizes selectively to (a) or (b) under stringent conditions; (2) recombinant expression cassette (EC) that includes (I) under transcriptional control of a promoter; (3) recombinant vector (RV) that contains (I) or EC; (4) host cell genetically transformed with (I); (5) increasing resistance of plants to Sclerotinia by transforming with a polynucleotide that encodes a protein at least 45 % identical with (I); (6) transgenic plants prepared by method (5) or transformed by EC; (7) evaluating a plant's resistance to Sclerotinia by detecting the allelic form of the PK-P gene; and (8) selecting a Sclerotinia-resistant plant by detecting an allele of the PK-P gene that confers resistance. ACTIVITY : Plant Antifungal. No details of tests for antifungal activity are given. MECHANISM OF ACTION : PK-P is a lectin protein kinase.
