The method involves obtaining a public identifier of a user, which permits an operator controlling a mobile telephone network (203) to identify the user, from an identification server, using a presentation server (206). Watermarking information having the public identifier and an identifier of digital content selected by the user, are transmitted by the server (206) to a watermarking server (210) for watermarking the selected content. An independent claim is also included for a device for protecting digital content provided by a digital content server.
