PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the visual display calibration method for complete characterization (characteristic test) for a display device. ;SOLUTION: The method is used to detect a characteristic of a display device 96 and has a step of generating a display model having plural parameters to relate a physical output of the display device 96 to an input signal for forming the display device 96, a step to introduce a model of a human visual system to generate plural control signals to display a pattern enabling to provide a visual selecting criterion to an observer 98 onto the display device 96, a step to send plural control signals to the display device 96 to form the pattern, a step selecting a specific pattern from the display device 96, and a step to decide a characteristic of the display device 96 by applying the parameter to the model.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
