The device for the coating, and especially for painting of vehicle bodies (2), has a multi-axis robot (7) carrying an application device, a linearly movable carriage (8) supporting the robot, and a guide structure (9) movable along the carriage. The guide structure has a force absorbing support element extending over the path of the movement of the robot and with a guide rail installed on the upper side to interact with a complementary linear guide on the carriage. The support element is formed by a hollow profile which on at least one side is stiffened by a number of reinforcing ribs.
