The burner has a burner plate (30) made up of metal fabric, which is not pressed against a slit formed between a burner housing and a distributor plate (20). The plate (30) forms a burning area and lies quite flatly on the plate (20). The slit is formed by a step by step clamping section, which surrounds the burning area. The plate (20) has outlet openings for distributing burning gas-air mix on the surface of a burner top opening.
