A castable aluminum alloy comprises (wt.%) silicon (0-19), copper (0-5), magnesium (0-1.5), zinc (=3), nickel (=2), titanium (=0.3), iron (0-1.5), and manganese (0.2-3). The weight ratio of manganese/iron is =0.6 when iron is less than 0.4 wt.%, and the weight ratio of manganese/iron is =1 when iron is =0.4 wt.% to reduce porosity and improve tensile strength of a casting made from the alloy. An independent claim is also included for a method of casting, comprising melting the inventive castable aluminum alloy, introducing the melted alloy into a mold, and solidifying the melted alloy in the mold to form a casting where the ratio reduces porosity and increases tensile strength of the casting.
