The method for the monitoring of coolant temperature in an engine of a vehicle entails verifying that the outside air temperature is sufficiently high, ensuring that the engine is supplied with a sufficient amount of power during a predetermined time interval, and measuring the coolant temperature if the conditions according to the aforesaid stages during the predetermined time interval are met. The measured temperature is then compared with a predetermined lower threshold value and an alarm is triggered if the measured coolant temperature is lower than the threshold value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a computer programme for the monitoring of a coolant temperature transmitter in a motor vehicle in which a coding component which is effective during the operating procedure of a control unit; (B) a control unit comprising at least one memory unit which includes a computer programme; and (C) a motor vehicle equipped with the aforesaid control unit for coolant temperature monitoring.
