The device has tracking actuators (7a, 7b) for tracking respective path edge detectors (5a, 5b) with reference to path edges. Tracking detectors (17a, 17b) detect an actual position of the respective edge detector. An evaluation unit (19) processes the actual positions of the edge detectors at the path edges based on a comparative algorithm, and outputs a warn signal when the processing result fulfills specified error criteria. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a printing machine comprising an error detecting device (B) an error detecting method for detecting a path fissure or a print material path defect in a printing machine.
