Wine glasses (1) in a staggered array are moved along a conveyer (2). There may be three sensors (6) in a carriage (5) which may move transversely across the width of the conveyer on an overhead beam (4). There is a drop in the amount of reflected light (7) as the rim of a glass moves under a sensor. The sensors are connected to a data reception circuit and a computer circuit which is connected to an input circuit (12).
