Safety monitoring device (8) comprises microprocessors (13a, 13b) for determining the speed of an elevator cabin and comparing with a predetermined movement profile. A triggering signal is produced when a predetermined theoretical speed value is exceeded. Preferred Features: The acceleration and/or the deviation of the acceleration of the movement of the cabin is determined by the microprocessors and compared with a predetermined movement profile. The microprocessors are synchronized using data comparison.
