A stent for vascular or non-vascular applications includes a biodegradable shape-memory polymer material (SMP). Independent claims are also included for (i) production of the stent from the SMP by extrusion, coating, casting or spinning or weaving; (ii) a kit comprising the stent and a heatable balloon catheter or a balloon catheter with a light conductor; and (iii) minimal invasion implantation of the stent comprising (1) placing the stent on a heatable or light-conductive balloon catheter, the SMP material having two programmed memory forms, the first of which is a tube with a greater diameter than the second; (2) introducing the thus-placed stent in its second form at the required place; (3) heating or illuminating the stent at a suitable wavelength (especially by UV); (4) effecting the SMP effect to convert the stent to its first or permanent form; and (5) removing the catheter.
