The method involves measuring the settlement of a building by using hydrostatic scales with a fluid balance container (21) and a fluid cylinder connected to a tube (22). A reference place (15) is situated outside of the building (13) and a horizontal sensor is mounted at the building or is brought into the building, that duplicates the settlement. The balance container is moved towards the cylinder along the train and stopped at a point before the measurements are taken. An independent claim is included for an arrangement to measure the settlement of a building.
