Area monitoring method whereby object recognition is achieved by video signal analysis. During a setup phase, parameters relating to the space to be monitored and the types of situation to be detected are manually or automatically entered. Finally in a cyclical monitoring phase, the defined traffic areas are monitored to detect situations of the defined types, which are then classified according to type and location. An independent claim is made for a space monitoring system, especially for monitoring railway platforms with a video camera system.
