The method involves controlling the revolution rate via the quantity of injected fuel under no load for certain operating conditions, whereby a leaner mixture (30) is produced for a first period (T2) for excessive no-load revolution rate and a richer mixture (28) for a second period (T1) for a low revolution rate. The periods are selected so a defined lambda value is produced on average over two successive lean and rich mixture phases.
