PURPOSE: A method for estimating illumination in RGB three-dimensional color coordinate system of a digital image is provided to reduce data loss and estimate correct illumination state. CONSTITUTION: An identical color region is detected from a digital image using an RGB three-dimensional color space(S20). R, G, B value pairs of the detected identical color region are approximated into planes(S40,S41). Direction vectors are found from crossing lines of the approximated planes(S50,S60). When the direction vectors are determined, illumination is estimated in the RGB three-dimensional color space, giving the first consideration to direction(S70). The illumination is found using direction angles of the direction vectors in the three-dimensional space.
