Microporous and mesoporous metal silicates are prepared by hydrothermal reaction of silicon and metal sources in the presence of a template compound. The selection of the feedstock affects the purity of the product and therefore the catalytic activity.;The pyrogenic mixed oxides according to the invention are used as sources of silicon and metals. The preferred products are (SiO 2 ) 1-X (AmOn) X ' wherein A is Ti, Al, B, V or Zr and X is 0.005 to 0.1. Molded articles of microporous and mesoporous metal silicates are obtained directly using molded articles of pyrogenic mixed oxides. The product obtained according to the present invention is used as an oxidation catalyst.
