PURPOSE: A transmit diversity device and a method in a mobile communication system are provided to select the best transmission antennas among a plurality of transmission antennas by using an STD(Selective Transmit Diversity) function, and to simultaneously transmit transmission symbols to the selected antennas by using a BLAST(Bell Lab Layered Space-Time) function, thereby improving a transmission rate and an error performance. CONSTITUTION: A receiver(200) BLAST-decodes signals received by a plurality of receiving antennas, estimates channel features of forward channels in accordance with each transmission antenna, and feeds back antenna select information for selecting the best transmission antennas based on the estimated forward channel features. A transmitter(100) selects the best transmission antennas according to the fed-back antenna select information, and BLAST-codes transmission symbols for the selected transmission antennas.
