PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for implementing a VLAN(Virtual Local Area Network) and a VPN(Virtual Private Network) in a distributed architecture router are provided to enable parts of a router to function as a metro Ethernet switch by using a VLAN bridge on a network processor of a PMD(Physical Media Device). CONSTITUTION: A distributed architecture router(100) provides scalability and high performance by using a maximum number of independent RNs(Routing Nodes) including RNs(110-140) connected by a switch(150) which includes a pair of high-speed switch fabrics(155a,155b). IOP(Input Output Processor) modules(116,126,136,146) buffer an IP(Internet Protocol) frame and an MPLS frame inputted from an adjacent router or a sub-net such as a router(190) and a network(195). Each PMD module within the RNs(110-140) makes a frame(or cell) inputted from an IP network(or ATM switch) to be processed in the IOP modules(116,126,136,146) a frame, and performs a bus conversion function. The switch fabrics(155a,155b) support frame switching among the IOP modules(116,126,136,146), and SWPs(Switch Processors)(160a,160b) respectively positioned in the switch fabrics(155a,155b) support system management. The distributed architecture router(100) implements a routing coordination protocol enabling every independent RN to work as a single router by maintaining a consistent link state database with respect to each RN. The PMD-a modules(112,122,132,142) receive an inbound data frame from a transmission peripheral device. PMD-b modules(114,124,134,144) transmit an outbound data frame to a reception peripheral device. The PMD-a modules(112,122,132,142) distinguish the PMD-b modules(114,124,134,144) from a receiver address within the inbound data frame and tunnel the inbound data frame to the PMD-b modules(114,124,134,144).
