PURPOSE: A mobile terminal having an abbreviated dialing function and its control method are provided to allow a user to easily make a call by inputting a portion of a phone number, and then selecting a desired phone number from a list of displayed phone numbers. CONSTITUTION: A key input unit(112) inputs a search number for searching a phone number stored in a mobile terminal(100). A microprocessor(120) checks the number of digits of the search number transferred from the key input unit(112), and if the number of digits of the search number is greater than a pre-set number, the microprocessor(120) controls so as to search a stored phone book including the search number. A data storing unit(114) temporarily stores a search result list generated from the mobile terminal.(100). A program memory unit(110) searches the stored phone book by using the search number and stores a phone number search program for generating the search result list. An SIM(Subscriber Identity Module)(116) stores the phone book and each recognition name corresponding to the phone book.
