PURPOSE: A self-seeded single-frequency solid-state ring laser, a single-frequency laser peening method, and a system using the same are provided to maintain constantly pulse heights and pulse widths without operator intervention to adjust the master oscillator. CONSTITUTION: An intra-cavity loss is induced into a resonator. At this time, the intra-cavity loss corresponds to the amount for preventing oscillation during a time necessary for storing the energy generated from the pump source in a gain medium. A gain having energy is built up from the pump source in the gain medium until a single-frequency relaxation oscillation pulse is formed in the resonator.
