PURPOSE: To provide an apparatus and a method for controlling grip of workpiece to prevent distortion of the workpiece, wherein side guides are controlled such that a side surface of the workpiece is gripped by the side guides when a bloom is metal-in rolling rolls, and gripping force is controlled to prevent initial generation of buckling, suppress formation of surface defects on the surface of the workpiece, and improve quality of the workpiece accordingly. CONSTITUTION: In an apparatus for controlling grip of a workpiece rolled by rolling rolls driven by a motor(14), the apparatus comprises a detecting part for load at rolling roll motor(51); a workpiece position detecting part(52) comprising a plural sensors for detecting rolling starting and rolling completion positions of the workpiece at input and output sides of the rolling rolls; a grip time calculating part(53) for calculating a grip time of the workpiece based on proceeding distance and proceeding speed of the workpiece set from a workpiece rolling start detecting time point by the workpiece position detecting part; a workpiece grip control part(54) for controlling grip of the workpiece by a side guide of the input side if load values detected by the rolling roll motor load detecting part are the same as or more than a set load value after rolling start of the workpiece is detected by the workpiece position detecting part, controlling grip of the workpiece using a side guide(12) of the output side when it is a workpiece grip time calculated by the grip time calculating part, and releasing grip of the workpiece if the load values detected by the rolling roll motor load detecting part are the same as or less than the set load value; and the side guides(12) which guide the workpiece transferred by transfer rolls(11) for transferring the workpiece to a set caliber of the rolling rolls from both sides, are operated by control of the workpiece grip control part, and include rolls, installed at certain parts of the workpiece side, for preventing friction.
