PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for switching a transmit diversity mode in a mobile communication system using a transmit diversity, particularly for setting a weight value when a closed-loop transmit diversity mode is changed by using previously used weight value information, are provided to minimize degradation of performance of a transmission diversity by reflecting a state of a radio channel. CONSTITUTION: A DPCCH(Dedicated Physical Control CHannel) and a DPDCH(Dedicated Physical Data CHannel) are multiplexed to form a DPCH(Dedicated Physical CHannel). A DPCH signal is scrambled by scrambling codes through a multiplier(904). The scrambled DPCH signal is multiplied by weight values(W1.W2) by multipliers(906,908) and each calculated signal is transmitted through antenna1(914) and antenna2(916). An FBI(FeedBack Information) message determining unit(918) analyzes an FBI message transmitted through the uplink DPCCH and transfers an analysis result to a mode change determining unit(922). The mode change determining unit(922) determines whether a transmit diversity mode has been changed. If the transmit diversity mode has been changed, the FBI message determining unit(918) determines a weight value of each antenna. A weight value generator(920) generates a pre-set weight value according to the change of the mode and transfers the generated weight value to the multipliers(906,908). The weight value generator(920) is informed that the mode has not been changed by the mode change determining unit(922), it generates a weight value to be used in a base station. The signal transmitted to the antenna1(914) and antenna2(916) are multiplied with specific pilot channel signals(CPICH1,CPICH2) set by each antenna by multipliers(910,912).
