The invention relates to a method and a device for determining a variable characteristic of a mass that rests on the seating area of a seat. For this purpose, a first to fourth force sensor (9, 10, 11, 12) is associated with a seat (1). The first force sensor (9) detects a force (F1) that acts upon a seating area (2) of the seat (1) in the area facing a back rest (4) of the seat (1) and facing a buckle (8) associated with the seat. The second force sensor (10) detects a force (F2) that acts upon the seating area (2) in the area facing the back rest (4) and facing away from the buckle (8). A third force sensor (11) detects a force (F3) that acts upon the seating area (2) in the area facing away from the back rest (4) and facing the buckle (8). A fourth force sensor (12) detects a force (F4) that acts upon the seating area (2) in the area facing away from the back rest (4) and facing away from the buckle (8). A basic value (GW) of the variable characteristic of the mass that rests on the seating area (2) is determined depending on the forces (F1, F2, F3, F4) detected by the first to fourth force sensors (9, 10, 11, 12). At least one comparative value (V1, V2) is detected depending on the force (F1) of the first force sensor (9) and the force (F2, F3, F4) detected by one of the other force sensors (10, 11, 12). A value of the variable characteristic of the mass that rests on the seating area (2) is detected depending on the basic value (GW) and the at least one comparative value (V1, V2).
