The present invention relates to a system that allows the specific regulation of a gene in a eukaryotic cell. The system comprises a novel repressor gene construct (shown in Fig.1), wherein the construct comprises a promoter (stippled box) operably linked to a rabbit ß-globin intron2/exon3 sequence (open box) which is operably linked to a modified lac repressor coding region which is operably linked to rabbit ß-globin 3' untranslated sequences (solid bar). The modified lac repressor coding region is made up of segments that are identical to the wild type bacterial sequence (crosshatched box), and segments that have been reencoded to use mammalian codons (striped box).
