Combinations of lasers and different filters are used to generate images for laser-filter combinations, which are divided into cells from which separate fluorescence signals can be measured. A method for characterizing samples by fluorescence microscopy comprises the use of two or more lasers in combination with two or more different filters in order to generate a image for each laser/filter combination. The resulting images are divided into cells from which separate fluorescence signals can be measured.
