A method is provided for jury research to prepare counsel for trial in bifurcated punitive damages cases and training for jury consultants to develop more accurate predictions of punitive damage awards. The method increases the accuracy of punitive damages predictions, because, unlike prior art research methods, it takes the coalitions and antagonisms that develop during liability deliberations into account. The method includes assembling a pool of jurors and presenting the liability case. Pre-liability deliberation questionnaires are administered that focus on the reaction of the jurors to the liability case. The results are analyzed to determine whether each of the jurors is plaintiff-oriented or defendant-oriented. Based on these data, a punitive damages research jury is assembled from the pool, and the research jury deliberates the liability case to a verdict. The damages case is presented, and the research jury deliberates to reach a decision on the amount of punitive damages.
