The present invention relates to a method for measuring a change in the apoptotic properties of the cell or by changes in the expression of the reporter gene or genes bbc3, to identify compounds that modulate directly or indirectly apoptosis. The invention also relates to methods of identifying compounds that interact with the promoter of the gene bbc3 and methods of identifying compounds that modulate the expression of genes bbc3. In addition, how to modulate apoptosis of cells, how to modulate bbc3 gene expression in cells, how to make a modulator of apoptosis, and the present invention relates to a process for making a modulator of bbc3 gene expression. Finally, the invention relates to sequences homologous thereto and the promoter of the gene and bbc3 compounds were identified by each of the methods of the present invention.
