PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new magnesium oxide nanotube and a new magnesium oxide nanocable useful as a nanodevice, etc., in electrical and optical fields and to provide a method for producing the same.;SOLUTION: The magnesium oxide nanocable is produced by heating magnesium powder at 850-1,000°C and heating zinc oxide powder or indium oxide powder at 1,300-1,400°C in a vacuum, carrying out a reaction and then cooling the resultant product. The magnesium oxide nanocable comprises an Mg-Zn alloy having a diameter of several nanometers included in a core part of magnesium oxide having a cross-sectional shape of a square having one side of longer than ten nanometers to 200 nanometers and a length not smaller than several micrometers. The magnesium oxide nanotube is a magnesium oxide single crystal of a tubular shape having 30-150 nanometers outside diameter and a length not smaller than several micrometers.
