PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling the structure of carbon nanofiber enabling the edge face ratio of the fiber and its pore volume to be increased. PSOLUTION: The method for controlling the structure of carbon nanofiber comprises the following practice: Carbon nanofibers 1.00-1.25 in the intensity ratio R=ISBD/SB/ISBG/SBfor G-band and D-band in the Raman spectroscopy determined at a laser wavelength 514.5 nm are heat-treated in a hydrogen atmosphere to carry out a selective gasification of the amorphous phase in the fibers until 10 wt.% or greater weight loss of the fibers is accomplished, thus bringing the above intensity ratio to greater than 1.25.
