PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable files held in multimedia information devices connected to a home network to be managed in a unified manner at reduced cost without placing a burden on the network. PSOLUTION: One of the multimedia information devices connected to the network is used as a master. An integrated directory list 41 about all the files within the network is created and managed by the master. For this, each of the devices is provided with a respective program 31-34 for retaining and synchronizing the integrated directory list 41 and a program 37 for searching and displaying the list. Also, a master/slave switch program 35 is provided for selecting an optimal master depending on the disconnection of the master from the network or the connection of new devices.
