The method involves detecting a starting of principal combustion from a principle injection successively for increasing or decreasing duration of pulses. Two groups of durations of the pulses are obtained. The groups of durations of the pulses are separated by an interval in which a minimum duration of the pulse is determined for achieving a pilot injection.
