The concentration of several selected gases in an oil are measured (in 1). The data are sent to a treatment unit (3) containing at least one calculation rule giving a characteristic numerical level (Nt, Nd, Na, Ni) as a function of the gas concentrations, associated with an effect which can occur in the equipment such as heating, discharge, arc or insulation impact. Indicators (8) supply the user with information from the numerical level characteristic of the calculated effect. At least two messages (M) indicate the presence and absence of the effect(s) associated with the calculation rule(s) and there is at least one rule for selecting an indication message as a function of at least one characteristic numerical level (Nt, Nts, Nd, Ndt, Na, Nat, Nico, Nico2) of the associated default recorded in the treatment unit. The indication message gives the user a quantitative indication of the level(s) calculated. The levels are indicated in the form of curves as a function of date, displayed with the same scale. The heat effect level is calculated using data from a number of gas concentration measurements for at least two gases, determining the upper and lower limits of reference intervals where consecutive values cross reference levels and selecting one reference interval with the smallest deviation and recalculating the level in that interval from reference curves using the measured concentrations. An Independent claim is included for a device for carrying out the above process, with a box enclosing the means of measuring gas concentrations, a data treatment unit and means of indicating to the user the results from the treatment unit.
